The yellow fever vaccine is a single dose injection given in the upper arm providing lifelong immunity to most people. There are some exceptions though.  Children under two may need a booster. Those women who were pregnant at the time of first dose, those people who have weak immune system, those who are HIV positive and those who had bone marrow transplant post vaccination may need a booster.

What is Yellow fever?

Yellow fever is a fatal viral disease caused by bites by infected Aedesaegypti mosquitoes. This ailment is very prevalent in tropical parts of Africa and South America. Yellow fever virus has three transmission cycles. Jungle (sylvatic) is the first cycle. In Africa, an intermediate (savannah) cycle follows jungle (sylvatic) cycle. Third cycle is urban cycle. In South America, intermediate cycle is bypassed.

Main symptoms of yellow fever

Symptoms start to show up after 3 to 6 days of being bitten by an infected mosquito. The symptoms include:

  • temperature
  • Muscle pain
  • Headache
  • Feeling sick or nauseated
  • Backache
  • eyes being sensitive to light
  • Loss of appetite 


1 in 4 cases develop more serious symptoms, such as:

  • Jaundice, yellowing of the skin and eyes
  • Vomiting blood or blood in the stool.
  • Bleeding from the mouth, nose, eyes or ears


If you are travelling in a region where yellow fever infection is prevalent and you get the symptoms, seek medical help urgently. If you return from such a region and have symptoms, contact your GP.
