// Diseases Overview

What Is Meningococcal Disease and Why Does It Strike So Fast?

Meningococcal disease causes meningitis and septicaemia. It can kill within hours of first symptoms.

How Meningococcal Disease Passes Between People

In healthy carriers the bacteria are harmless in the throat and are transmitted by respiratory droplets during prolonged, close contact. Big events such as the Hajj gather people from many countries together in conditions that are almost perfect for transmission.

The Symptoms That Demand Immediate Attention

Within hours, a sudden fever, headache, stiff neck, and vomiting can develop into a potentially fatal situation. A rash that doesn’t blanch is a medical emergency; get help right away.
// Vaccine Options

Which MenACWY Vaccine Will You Receive at Our Clinic?

Three MenACWY conjugate vaccines are available, all covering strains A, C, W, and Y. Suitable for adults and children aged 2 and over.

Menveo

Menveo is equally effective against all four meningococcal strains and is used when Nimenrix is unavailable or clinically preferable. A single dose provides five years of protection from age 2.

MenQuadfi

At our clinic we offer MenQuadfi as a third conjugate option. Each vaccine has a different protein carrier. Your pharmacist will check which product is in stock and is best for you.

Nimenrix

Nimenrix is a conjugate MenACWY vaccine licensed for 2 years and older. One dose protects against strains A, C, W and Y for five years. Meningococcal group B is not included.

Side Effects You Should Know

The most common side effects are mild and local redness, tenderness or swelling at the site of injection. Some patients have transient fatigue, headache, or low-grade fever. Serious reactions are uncommon. The vaccine is only delayed if you have an acute febrile illness on the day.

// Risk

The Travellers Most Vulnerable to Meningococcal Disease

While anyone can catch meningococcal disease, some groups face a much higher risk based on destination, age, health, and trip type.
Risk Group
Why the Risk Is Higher

Hajj and Umrah pilgrims

Millions gather in close contact from high-prevalence countries worldwide.

Travellers to the Sub-Saharan meningitis belt

Seasonal epidemics occur regularly, with peak risk during the dry season.

Backpackers and long-stay travellers

Extended exposure in endemic areas, often in close-contact living conditions.

Healthcare workers in clinical settings abroad

Direct patient contact where meningococcal disease may be circulating undiagnosed.

Travellers attending international mass gatherings

Large crowds from multiple countries create conditions similar to pilgrimage settings.

Individuals with asplenia or complement deficiency

These conditions dramatically increase susceptibility to invasive meningococcal disease.

// Travel Safety Tips

Staying Safe from Meningitis Abroad

The MenACWY vaccine is the primary and most effective defence against the four meningococcal strains it covers. A few additional precautions in crowded or high-risk environments.

Avoiding close contact and staying hygienic

At mass gatherings and if symptoms develop
