One of the most frequently diagnosed vaccine-preventable illnesses among UK tourists returning home is hepatitis A, a liver infection spread by tainted food and water. It is especially prevalent in areas with poorer sanitation standards.
Food or water polluted with infected faeces is the most common way that hepatitis A is spread through the faecal-oral route. Eating raw or undercooked shellfish, drinking unfiltered water, and consuming food handled by an infected person without washing their hands are common ways to become infected.
Fatigue, nausea, stomach discomfort, and appetite loss are among the symptoms that typically appear two to four weeks after exposure. As the infection worsens, jaundice appears, causing pale stools and dark urine, as well as yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes
Hepatitis B is a viral infection of the liver spread through blood, sexual contact and exposure to infected body fluids. It is far more likely to develop into a chronic disease than hepatitis A, and the chronic infection is the leading cause of cirrhosis and liver cancer worldwide.
Hepatitis B is not spread by food or water. It is spread by direct contact with infected blood or body fluids, such as through unsterilised medical or dental equipment, tattooing or piercing with improperly cleaned needles, and unprotected sex.
In reality, many hepatitis B infections have no symptoms at all during the acute stage of the illness, making early detection challenging without testing. Fatigue, jaundice, discomfort in the abdomen, and dark urine are among the symptoms that typically show up one to four months after exposure.

Twinrix Adult covers those 16 and over. Paediatrics covers ages 1 to 15. Standard course: 0, 1, and 6 months. Adults 18 and over can follow an accelerated schedule at 0, 7, and 21 days with a fourth dose at 12 months. Ambirix offers a two-dose alternative for children aged 1 to 15. The most common reaction is a sore arm for a day or two. Some people notice mild fatigue, a short headache, or a low-grade fever. Twinrix is available in pre-filled syringes. Please tell us if you have a latex allergy when you book. Serious reactions are uncommon.
Twinrix is the most practical choice for healthy travellers heading to destinations where both hepatitis A and hepatitis B are a risk.

If you have already had a course for Hepatitis A, Twinrix may not be suitable. Your pharmacist will review your history and advise the best way forward at your consultation.
